The heart and soul of every Clareo Designs gem is a material called Dichroic Glass. Originally developed for NASA, microscopic coatings of crystal and metallic oxides, such as titanium and magnesium, are applied to a glass surface by an electron beam gun in a vacuum
chamber. This coating allows certain wavelengths of light to pass, while reflecting others. Very helpful, for example, in protecting sensitive satellite equipment from harmful cosmic rays. The human eye sees these changes in wavelength as color, and as light strikes the coatings from various angles, the colors can even appear to change.
Clareo Designs dichroic glass uses up to 25 different layers of these metallic coatings, each one just a few millionths of an inch in thickness. These are applied to various types of smooth and rough glass surfaces, yielding an endless explosion of ever-changing colors from which the artists can choose to design their masterpieces.
The artists combine various types of glass, dichroic and other materials, which are fused in special kilns at temperatures of up to 1500 degrees. Many designs are fused multiple times as additional materials are added. Finally, the gems are ground, polished and readied for sale. The entire process can take several days.
Rather than a singular artistic vision, the Clareo Designs Collection reflects the cumulative efforts and diverse styles of their team of artists...there is a one-of-a-kind Clareo gem that’s perfect for every taste and occasion. Each Clareo Gem is truly as unique and special as the person who wears it.
