Richard Kolb and his son created the first Yardbird in August of 1991 in Jamestown, Kentucky. He has spent most of his career making things from metal. The first bird came about from their talking about and tinkering with scrap materials. People instantly loved them!
Today, Yardbirds are handcrafted in Louisville, Kentucky by Richard's son Rich. Their menagerie of birds, critters, dogs and cats has grown from one to over hundreds. Rich promises to always maintain a tradition of consistently creating exciting new designs.
When people ask Rich about his creations, he smiles and says, "The things in life that bring us the most joy are those which are fun and unexpected, not the mere necessities." He believes we can all benefit from a little more whimsy in our lives!
It is pretty simple: Yardbirds are really just about happiness.
Since each of these garden accents are made from recycled materials, each critter is slightly imperfect, but lovable all the same. All of the Junkyard critters are bare metal and naturally rust with age - that's their beauty. As we say, "They rust but they'll never run away!"
